Giving patients with early signs of rheumatoid arthritis rituximab – in combination with the current treatment methotrexate – can almost completely stop the disease progressing.
This insight could save thousands of people going on to suffer painful joint damage and disability.
The study, by the University of Amsterdam, found that nearly 70% of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis symptoms who took both drugs developed no further joint damage.
In comparison, the joints of patients taking only methotrexate continued to deteriorate.
